Djibouti Brief

Djibouti is a small country on the coast of East Africa in a region commonly called the "Horn of Africa". It is considered a strong ally of the United States in the region. The country gained its independence from France in 1977 and still hosts a French military base. The country borders Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia and is a short distance from Yemen (across the Gulf of Aden).

The U.S. maintains a base - Camp Lemonnier - where is operates aircraft, a task force, and small special operations contingent. The overall U.S. military command is named the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA). There is also a smaller element known as the Special Operations Command and Control Element - Horn of Africa (SOCCE-HOA). In addition, it is reported that drones are operated from the base. 1.
